The Japanese Journal of Clinical Physiology:
Information for Authors
01. The purpose of this journal is to further progress and developments in the field of clinical physiology, with an emphasis on clinical pathophysiology. Manuscripts will be accepted in Japanese or English, and may take the form of original research, case reports, short reports, or reviews. Only manuscripts that have not already been published elsewhere, or that are not currently under consideration for such, are eligible for submission. The only exceptions to this will be 1) in the case of an abstract which has been, or is to be, published as part of an academic conference; and 2) in the case of parallel publication where a study is to be published in both languages. In this case, written permission for such will be required from the journal in which it was first published and the editorial committee of this society.
02. In the case of an original clinical research paper, it must be clearly stated that prior approval for the study protocol was obtained from the ethics committee of the institute concerned.
03. In principle, the author should be a member of the Japanese Society of Clinical Physiology.
04. Japanese manuscripts should be prepared using Word or a similar computer software package. One sheet of paper (A4) should contain a maximum of 400 printed characters (20 X 20). The upper, lower, and side margins should be 30 mm. The script should read from left to right. All characters, including punctuation and parentheses, will count as 1 character each. A new line should be indented by one space. After review and acceptance for publication, a fresh copy of the final manuscript should be submitted together with a digital file of such on a CD. For online submissions, please see 21 below.
05. Any foreign words in Japanese manuscripts should be written in an English font. Foreign loan-words, however, may be written in katakana (please use full-width font in this case).
06. The CGS system should be used for units of measure: such as mm, sec. mL, etc. Pressure may be indicated by mmHg.
07. Each figure, table, and photograph should be described in English and printed as 1 per page. The number of the figure (photograph) and the name of the author should be printed on the back of each one. If necessary, instructions as to which way is up or down may also be written by hand in Japanese on the back of each one. The place at which each figure or table is to be inserted into the manuscript should be clearly indicated in red font in the right-hand margin of the text (hand-written is permitted). All tables and figures may also be prepared using Power Point.
08. Original manuscripts should be prepared according to the following format:
  (1) The title should be written in Japanese and then in English immediately below on the title page in Japanese manuscripts.
  (2) Author names should be written in Japanese and then in English immediately below on the title page in Japanese manuscripts. Co-authors and their respective institutions should be numbered from the second author onwards.
  (3) The authors’ affiliated institutions should be listed in Japanese and then in English immediately below on the title page in Japanese papers.
  (4) The contact details (address, telephone number, FAX number, and e-mail address) of the corresponding author should be included on the title page.
  (5) In Japanese papers, the second page (NOTE: for numbering, however, see 6 below) should comprise a Summary in Japanese (within 400 characters) and the third page an abstract in English (within 500 words; double-spaced; sub-headings should be Objectives, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion).
  (6) Numbering: the title page will be page 0; the text (Japanese Summary, English Abstract, Background, Objectives, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and References) will thereafter be numbered as page 1 (Japanese summary) onwards, with the number to be placed at the bottom of the page in the middle.
  (7) Figure legends should be written in English
  (8) Tables should be prepared in English and labeled in the order of Table 1, Table 2, etc. The title of each table should be given at the top and the key to abbreviations at the bottom.
  (9) Figures should be prepared in English and labeled in the order of Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.
  (10) The title page, abstracts, figures, and tables will be counted as 1 page each, with no more than a maximum of 20 pages allowed. In print, this should come to no more than 5 pages.
09. Manuscripts prepared in English will follow most of the instructions given above where appropriate. However, in addition to an English abstract, they should also include a Japanese summary of no more than 800 characters to be appended as a final page to the manuscript. Please note that this Japanese abstract will not be published. The main paper should be printed on A4 paper. One line will contain no more than 60 letters in 12-point font. There should be a maximum of 24 lines on each page, double-spaced, with a 30-mm margin at the top/bottom and on the left/right sides. There are no particular requirements regarding type of font, word wrap, or justification, etc.
10. The English of English-language papers of any kind and the English-language abstracts of Japanese-language papers must be reviewed by a native English-speaker. Certification of such should be submitted together with the manuscript. Submissions of papers in English unaccompanied by certification of English editing by a native English-speaker will be subject to an English language review by the resident English language consultant of this society. The fee for this review will be charged to the author. In this case, the author will receive notification on how such payment should be made.
11. Abbreviations are permitted if used frequently throughout the paper. However, they should be kept to a minimum. Each abbreviation should be written out in full on its first appearance followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter, only the abbreviation should be used, except at the beginning of a sentence, in which case it should be written in full.
12. References should be numbered in order of appearance in the manuscript. Numbers should be placed as upper, small-sized characters immediately (no space) at the end of a particular word or after a punctuation mark. The References section should begin on the next page following the Conclusion. Each reference number should be followed by a bracket (for example, 1) etc.). Each reference for a paper should include the following information and in the following order: author names (surname first, followed by initials of other names), title of paper, journal name (in italics), date of publication, volume (in bold type), first and last page numbers. For other types of publication, such as a book, the following should be given, and in the following order: author names, chapter title, book title, name of editor, edition, publisher name, city, year of publication, and page numbers (first and last). References should be kept to a minimum, with a maximum of 40 permitted. No limit is set in the case of a review paper, however.

13. English-language papers should comprise no more than 20 pages in total, including 1 page for the abstract, those of the main text, and the Japanese summary, figure legends, tables, and figures (photographs). Each figure and table will be counted as a separate page. Where the total number of pages in the printed edition exceeds 5, an extra charge will be made for publication. Where required, adjustments may be made to the size of each figure or table.

A maximum of 2 tables and figures in total will be allowed. These must be accompanied by legends in English.
18. Regarding conflict of interest (COI): If remuneration or assistance of any kind that might pose a conflict with the contents of the paper has been received, this must be clearly stated at the end of the main text. NOTE: it must also be clearly stated that none has been received, should that be the case.
19. All manuscripts must be submitted in triplicate (1 original and 2 copies). All photographs must also be submitted in the same manner. When submitting online, the author should register on the society homepage and submit in accordance with the instructions given therein.
